Vanilla Bourbon Reserve Review
There are some things you learn after years in uniform, and one of them is that coffee can either get the job done or actually make the day better. I spent enough time around office coffee and deployment-grade freeze-dried coffee to know the difference. The break room stuff kept us moving, but it never made anybody excited. That is why Vanilla Bourbon Reserve from Engine 4 Coffee Company felt like such a welcome change.
Aroma and first sip
This roast opens with dark chocolate and roasted hazelnut, then finishes with soft notes of vanilla bean and toffee. It has a richness that feels smooth and deliberate, with enough depth to keep it interesting from the first sip to the last. The flavor profile is bold without being harsh, and the finish has a gentle sweetness that makes the cup feel complete.
French press notes
I brewed Vanilla Bourbon Reserve in a French press first, and that brought out its body and aroma beautifully. The darker notes had more room to breathe, and the cup felt fuller and more rounded.
Cold brew experience
I also made it as a cold brew, and that version was completely different in the best way. The vanilla bean and toffee came forward more clearly, and the result was smooth, refreshing, and easy to enjoy on a warm Hampton Roads day. During the summer golf season, I particularly enjoy cold coffee that I can drink on the course during play. Keeps pep in my swing.
Why freshness matters
Freshness matters where we live. Whether you are heading out early in Norfolk, starting a long shift in Chesapeake, or trying to get moving before sunrise in Virginia Beach or Newport News, you want coffee that feels dependable and fresh. Engine 4 Coffee Company gets that right because they roast to order. You are not getting something mass-produced and forgotten in storage. You are getting coffee roasted with care and shipped fresh.
For me, Vanilla Bourbon Reserve brought back the old satisfaction of finding something better than the standard issue coffee we all tolerated for years. It is the kind of cup that reminds you what a good morning can taste like.
